Personal Bill of Rights
- I have the right to ask for what I want or need.

- I have the right to say no to anything when I feel I am not ready, it is unsafe, or it violates my values.
- I have the right to determine my own priorities.
- I have the right not to be responsible for others’ behavior, actions, feelings or problems.
- I have the right to expect honesty from others.
- I have the right to be angry with someone I love.
- I have the right to be uniquely myself.
- I have the right to feel scared and say, “I’m afraid”.
- I have the right to say, “I don’t know”.
- I have the right not to give excuses for my behavior.
- I have the right to make decisions based on my own feelings.
- I have the right to my own needs for personal space and time.
- I have the right to be playful.
- I have the right to be healthier than those around me.
- I have the right to be in a nonabusive environment.
- I have the right to make friends and be comfortable around people.
- I have the right to change and grow.
- I have the right to have my needs and wants respected by others.
- I have the right to be treated with dignity and respect.
- I have the right to be happy.
- I have the right to maintain my dignity by being properly assertive – even if the other person feels hurt, as long as I do not violate the other person’s basic human rights.
- I have the right to be left alone.
- I have the right to get what I paid for.
- I have the right to change my mind.
- I have the right to be successful & independent.
- I have the right NOT to feel guilty in making decisions that are in my best interest. It is my responsibility to take care of my needs.
When you feel guilty or selfish in making a decision or are afraid to assert yourself, it is helpful to refer to this list to reinforce your right to speak up & make decisions. Post this list in a conspicuous place so you may refer to it daily. By taking the time to read carefully through the list every day, you will eventually learn to accept that you are entitled to each one of these rights. Remember, you cannot control how others will react. You can only control your own actions, feelings and behavior
